In Chinese medicine, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is included within the disease categories of chi dai, lao nian xing chi dai or dai bing which can refer to various dementias. Chinese Medicine (CM) considers AD to be located in the brain and related to Kidney, Heart, Liver and Spleen. Kidney deficiency and insufficiency of the qi and Blood lead to 'Marrow deficiency' and loss of brain tissue with loss of mental functioning. Pathogens such as phlegm, stasis, fire, and toxins can trigger or exacerbate the progress of AD. This chapter introduces the main aetiology, pathogenesis and CM syndromes. Treatments are described based on practice guidelines, clinical texts and scholarly papers and include Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, as well as prevention, nursing and dietary therapy.
