Many studies published in Chinese and international scientific journals have investigated the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) for psoriasis vulgaris. This chapter provides an up-to-date synopsis and analysis of the clinical trial literature and an assessment of the state of evidence. Comprehensive searches were conducted in nine databases, identifying over 6,300 citations. These were assessed against rigorous criteria resulting in exclusion of over 6,000 citations. Finally, 267 clinical studies that investigated CHM for psoriasis vulgaris were selected for inclusion in the analyses presented in this chapter. For the 118 included controlled clinical trials, a series of meta-analyses of results were performed to determine the efficacy and safety of oral or topical CHM for psoriasis vulgaris. The 149 non-controlled studies were evaluated to examine the interventions used and the safety profile of the CHMs tested. The evidence for CHM is promising, particularly when combined with pharmacotherapy or phototherapy.
