This chapter describes the aetiology, pathogenesis, syndrome differentiation, and treatments recommended in key Chinese medicine clinical textbooks and guidelines. In Chinese medicine, she chuan chuang is the main term used in contemporary texts to refer to herpes zoster. Herpes zoster is caused by pathogenic fire resulting from Liver qi stagnation or emotional disturbance. Obstruction in the channels can turn to heat which pushes outwards toward the skin. In addition, underlying Spleen deficiency can lead to dampness, which also obstructs the free flow of qi. Treatments are determined according to syndrome differentiation.
