With the increasing use of joint replacement surgery, the prevalence of periprosthetic joint
infections (PJI) has also increased. However, treating PJI has become a challenge for orthopaedic
surgeons because of the prevalence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria and the formation of
protective biofilms. Numerous studies have shown that garlic extract (GE) has antibacterial
activities and might be a good candidate for PJI treatment. This review explores the antibacterial
and antibiofilm activities of GE and its potential to be used in the treatment of PJI.
